No Lookin’ Back
Singer Kyle Maack and drummer Alvin Burnett, both ardent fans of Michael McDonald, found inspiration in the legendary artist's timeless sound and rich musical legacy. After discussing their shared admiration for McDonald’s work, they envisioned a tribute show that could not only honor his music but also allow them to express their own unique interpretations. The idea of "Minute By Minute" began to take shape, focusing on not just recreating McDonald's well-known hits but also infusing the performance with their personal musical styles. They meticulously selected a setlist that blended the classic tracks with fresh arrangements, creating an experience that appealed to both long-time fans and new listeners alike.
To bring their vision to life, Maack and Burnett enlisted guitarist Mike Ian as the musical director. With his extensive background and expertise in arranging for larger ensembles, Ian was key in coordinating the efforts of the eleven musicians involved in the project. Arranging the show along with keyboardist Ihsan Covert El and bassist John Colvin, each member was carefully chosen for their ability to complement the tribute’s spirit, ensuring that every performance would resonate with the audience. The collaboration resulted in a dynamic ensemble that captures the essence of McDonald’s music while allowing the individual talents of each musician to shine, ultimately creating an unforgettable musical experience.
Takin’ It to the Streets
The hard work and perseverance of the original core team, Kyle Maack, Alvin Burnett, Michael Ian, John Colvin, and Ihsan Covert El, culminated in a meticulously arranged production honoring the music and far reaching influence of Michael McDonald. As the vision expanded, vocalist Kellee Banks and Allen Bowser joined the lineup, bringing another dynamic voice to the front line. In the spring of 2025, Justice Norwood, replacing Bowser, became part of the group, completing the show’s current vocal lineup alongside Maack and Banks. An exceptional horn section featuring Carl Cox, Matt Cappy, and Andrew Boostrom added the power, precision, and soulful energy essential to the arrangements. Master percussionist Edgardo Cintrón was also brought aboard, contributing his unmistakable grooves and a rich rhythmic texture to the band’s sound.
The production made its debut at the Landis Theater in Vineland, New Jersey, on January 3, 2025, under the original title Minute By Minute: A Celebration of the Music of Michael McDonald. At the time, the ensemble itself did not yet have a formal name. Because Minute By Minute was the only established name attached to the project, the musicians could be perceived as simply a cover band called “Minute By Minute,” rather than a distinct group of artists presenting a fully developed concert production. As the project grew, it became clear that the band needed an identity separate from the title of the show.
The band officially became MXM, establishing a clear distinction between the artist and the production it presents. MXM is the artist. Minute By Minute, The Songbook of Michael McDonald is the show. This evolution reflects MXM’s identity as a creative ensemble rather than a conventional cover band. The group does not attempt to impersonate Michael McDonald or simply recreate recordings note for note. Instead, MXM presents carefully crafted live arrangements performed by accomplished artists who bring their own musicianship, personalities, and collective energy to this extraordinary catalog. The name MXM also gives the band room to develop and present additional concert productions beyond Minute By Minute in the future.
Since its debut, Minute By Minute has continued to grow through sold out and near capacity performances, major festival and theater appearances, radio exposure, and appearances connected with 93.3 WMMR and The Preston & Steve Show. The production has reached audiences at venues and events including 118 North, Ardmore Music Hall, Newtown Theatre, Rose Tree Park, the Golden Nugget Atlantic City, and WMMR’s Camp Out for Hunger. Each performance has further affirmed the care, authenticity, and artistry behind the show.
